IHSA Update

On July 29, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) made the decision to play all sports this school year, but with a modified schedule. There will be four seasons: fall, winter, spring and summer. The fall season is currently happening, which started on Aug. 10 and is expected to go through Oct. 10.

The only sports that will be played this fall season are boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, girls tennis and girls swimming and diving. Because of the new shift in seasons, football, girls volleyball and boys soccer will now be played in the spring season, which is from Feb. 15 to May 1.

The fall sports being played are all considered a lower risk, so they are all allowed to participate in competitions with other teams, taking all of the precautions they are advised to do. When the IHSA released the modified schedule, there was not a plan for a postseason yet.

On Aug. 24, the IHSA met on their virtual regularly scheduled meeting to discuss the possibility of a postseason for the fall sports. After meeting, they concluded that all of the fall sports will be allowed a single round of localized competition in October. Girls and boys golf will be held on Oct. 6 and 7, while cross country, tennis and swimming and diving will be held the week of Oct. 19-24 to conclude their season.

All of the tournaments and competitions that are being held will follow the guidelines of the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH), like they have been doing for their practices. In the next coming weeks, IHSA will meet and decide the finalizing details of all of the postseason competitions.

The winter season will then begin on Nov. 16 until Feb. 13 with multiple sports that range from lower-higher risk. The Spring season also has multiple sports that also range from low-high risk. The added summer season will then run from May 3 until June 26 to conclude the 2020-2021 school sports year with multiple lower risk sports, two medium risk sports and then one higher risk sport.
