Academic Team Briefs
Team: Chess
Head Coach: Mr. Mott
Seniors/most experienced players:
“We lost a number of seniors last year, but Zain Ahmad, Jensen Stahr, Gavin Jensen and Colin Hamann are some of our most experienced players,” said Mr. Mott.
Vision for the team:
“Continual improvement is what we strive for. Our goal is to be our best at sectionals to qualify for the state meet in February.”
Biggest competition:
“Nearly every school in the MSL is good at chess. The top 5 MSL schools are typically in the top 25 out of 125 teams at state.”
Coach’s comments:
“The team is very fortunate to have two RMHS graduates who are volunteer coaches for the team (Jon and Becca Phillips). Their knowledge and dedication to the chess team is invaluable.“
Team: DECA
Head Coach: Mr. Nugent
Vision for the team:
“To qualify as many students as possible for the State competition and hopefully a few for Nationals as well. Besides the competition aspect, I want to continue to have students grow their passion for business and have fun along the way,” stated Mr. Nugent.
Biggest competition:
“I would say we’re a little different from other types of teams such as scholastic bowl and math team because we don’t compete directly against one school. The way DECA works is that there are individual and group events where students compete against other students from all across the area. We have four competitions throughout the year: District, Regional, State, and Nationals. The first two competitions are guaranteed for all students, but then you must qualify for State and Nationals.”
Coach’s comments:
“DECA is also responsible for running our school coffee shop, Brewhaha. This unique opportunity allows students to gain valuable business skills while running the day to day operations of a small business.”
Team: Congressional Debate
Head Coach: Mr. Waters
Seniors/most experienced players:
Gunnar Hartman – Senior – 3 year member
Vision for the team:
“This year we envision several of our debaters winning best speaker awards. This year we will compete in both the ICDA State Championship and IHSA State Tournament. We want to see our team place at ICDA State and we want to see someone from our team advance to the semi finals at IHSA State,” said Mr. Waters.
Biggest competition:
“We compete in a very competitive league. Our biggest competitors are Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove, and Grayslake Central.”
Coach’s comments:
“We are always welcoming new debaters to our team. Please join us!”
Team: FCCLA
Head coach: Ms. Krupicka
Seniors/most experienced players:
“Sara Pilkati and Heni Soni are seniors and competed at the state level last year. Both received Silver Medals in Fashion Design (Sara) and Preschool Storytelling (Heni),” said Ms. Krupicka.
Vision for the team:
“The club does a bunch of fun activities throughout the school year but we also have a competition season that is from January and February. My goal as their advisor is to help my members get a medal at the competition. If they get a gold medal at the regional competition they get to go to State in Springfield so I really try and get everyone to that state competition. “
Coach’s comments:
“We’re still accepting new members and our next meeting is October 10th from 3-4 in the Culinary Arts Lab. You’ll learn how to make a cinnamon sugar donut from biscuit dough!”
Team: Math team
Coaches: Mr. Jones, Mr. Patterson, and Ms. Joseph
Seniors/most experienced players:
“Jacob Painter, Lorelei Osterlund, and Amanda Daly are some of our standout seniors on the team,” said Mr. Patterson.
Vision for the team:
“Our team tends to be smaller in number than some of our competitors, but we’d like to be competitive in each meet and be able to send several individuals and groups to the State Meet in the Spring.”
Biggest competition:
“New Trier, Whitney Young, and Libertyville are huge, untouchable teams, but most of the schools in District 214 are in our league. So we see the other D214 schools as our biggest competitors.”
Coach’s comments:
“We haven’t been able to recruit many Freshmen yet for this year, so let’s get the word out that Math Team is fun and Freshmen are welcome. Practice is after school in C230 on Tuesdays.”
Team: Scholastic Bowl
Head coach: Mr. Olson and Mr. Popovich
Seniors/most experienced players:
Saanvi Srivastava, Grace Felho, Zachary Riley, Gunnar Hartman, Asad Tirmizi, Nathan Witt, and Lorelei Osterlund
Vision for the team:
“The vision for the team is to get better at all things Fine Arts. We are also hoping that our younger players are able to get some questions about history and geography! Last year math was our weakness, but I think we can turn that into a strength this year based on our returning varsity players. But at the end of the day it’s all about having a good time and nerding out over trivia,” said Mr. Popovich.
Biggest competition:
“Buffalo Grove, always Buffalo Grove. It’s a long shot given how dominant a team they are. I will say that we did hand them their only conference loss last year! (Let’s ignore the fact that their best player was absent that day!)”
Coaches’ comments:
“New players are always welcome – as are folks who may have taken a break last year and are interested in returning. Scholastic Bowl is a great way to spend your winter afternoons!”
Team: Speech and Acting
Head coach: Mr. Concialdi
Seniors/most experienced players:
“The seniors that probably have the most influence are Jack Repak and Lauren Ryoo, the two captains. Other seniors, with varying degrees of involvement, are Hannah Oloro, Gunnar Hartman, Heni Soni, Kacper Pancerz, Mia Silvestri, and Munkhjin Ider,” said Mr. Concialdi.
Vision for the team:
“The vision for this year, as it is every year, is to try to qualify at least one person to the State Championship. I think this year we have some talented and experienced students who have a good shot at qualifying. Beyond that, trying to earn team awards at tournaments, especially the Regional and Sectional tournaments, is another goal. To that end, having a full complement of events at Regionals is always a main goal. Outside of the competitive aspect, getting everyone to have fun and to bring the best out of them is the foundation of the team.”
Biggest competition:
“In our MSL Conference, Fremd and Prospect always have large and competitive teams, and they usually win the MSL West and East, respectively. It would be nice to take the MSL East title, of course. Statewide, the strongest teams are usually those a little further south, such as Hinsdale Central, Wheaton Warrenville South, and Downers Grove South.”
Coach’s comments:
“In more basic news, our competition season will start off with tournaments at Fremd and Prospect on Nov. 12. And of course, it’s never too late to join!”
Team: FFA
Head coaches: Ms. Wright and Ms. Eubanks
Seniors/most experienced players:
“Because we are a newer club, most of our leadership is underclassmen. Our one senior officer is Grace Haack (Junior Advisor) and our most experienced officer is Tessa Knepper (this year’s President, last year’s Secretary). Our Section Officers are Tessa Knepper, Sophie Murray, Damian Gil-Lara, and Haasini Vidapalipati,” said Ms. Wright.
Vision for the team:
“Our vision is to include more students this year at the local, section, and state level. This will include competitions, social events with other chapters, and increasing our community service involvement this year.“
Biggest competition:
“There are tons of chapters throughout the state that are amazing. Our local competitor is Chicago High School for Ag Sciences.”
Coach’s comments:
“FFA is a leadership organization that seeks to develop students’ premier leadership, personal growth, and career success. We play an active role in our school and community and have a lot of fun doing it. We’d love to have people join us at our next meeting, which is Tuesday, 10/18!”
Team: Model UN
Head coach: Mr. Ankrom
Seniors/most experienced players:
“Emily Douglas, Sophie Olson, Alyshah Mohammed, Izzy Declarador, and Janvi Patel are the most experienced seniors,” said Mr. Ankrom
Vision for the team:
“Our vision is to continue to grow in numbers and experience as we go to competitions at Benidictine University, the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois.”
Coach’s comments:
“We love to debate current events and learn how to make a better world! As a brand new club we are always looking for new members, come and check it out!”
