Racism and inequality is still a problem in today’s generation. Just Mercy, a movie about civil rights and inequality, shows us how and why these things are still happening. I recently watched this movie in my American Lit and Comp Class, and I just had to write a review. Just Mercy was released in 2019, starring Michael B. Jordan, a graduate from Harvard who sets out on a journey of freeing the wrongly imprisoned. The first case he took on was Walter McMillan’s, which was played by Jamie Foxx. Based on a true story, Johnny D (Walter McMillan’s nickname), was sentenced to death for the murder of an 18 year old girl, which he didn’t do. Bryan Stevenson is the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, where he played a big role in the movie and how it would play out.

Michael B. Jordan did an unbelievable job as an actor in this movie, you can clearly see the emotion and passion he has towards racism. It almost felt like I was right there with him feeling his pain and suffering for Johnny D. and the other wrongfully convicted. Jamie Foxx, who played Johnny D, did an excellent job at showing his emotions and struggles throughout the movie. Even though he is acting, it seemed like he was the one who went through all the pain of being wrongfully imprisoned. These two actors really made the movie what it was, with the help of a few other actors as well. It really set the stage as to what life was like for these two and how they were able to overcome what they did.

I have confidence in saying this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The acting based on the story itself grabs your attention, and will keep it for the duration of the movie. I was never bored and there was never a dull moment. It is also the only movie that has ever made me tear up a little. There are so many emotions being shown throughout the movie and it makes you anxious for what’s coming next. Everything about this movie is phenomenal. If you haven’t seen Just Mercy yet, I suggest you watch it whenever you can.
