On May 6, 2022, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened in cinemas. Even though it was just released, Marvel Studios, owned by Disney, made 450 million dollars on its opening weekend. And it has stirred up controversy about the future of Marvel movies. 

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness received a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The reviews from the public are mixed because of the new director Sam Raimi instead of Scott Derrickson. 

The movie was intense, much more so than we thought going into it. It started with the introduction of America Chavez, a multiverse traveling 14-year-old. She asked Doctor Strange to help her hide from the Scarlet Witch who wanted the power to travel between universes.

Doctor Strange and Chavez looked for the magical Book of Vishanti which was a heroic counter to the villainous book the Scarlet Witch was using, the Darkhold. The rest of the movie was basically a cat and mouse chase.

As someone who doesn’t follow the MCU as closely as others, I was able to follow the plotline relatively easily. I was surprised by the amount of gore in the movie but that’s definitely what you can expect from Sam Raimi as a director. 

The backstory behind America Chavez’s powers was interesting and was set up to be a great story about intersectionality in superheroes. However, they fumbled with the bag and instead of making her a dimensional character, they gave her a hard to care about personality.

There isn’t much to say about the plot of the movie itself except that it was entertaining on a surface level. If you’re looking for more than a movie to casually enjoy, I wouldn’t go with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. 

Hopefully, they will tie up loose ends if another movie comes out but for now, they left a lot of us wondering what’s going to happen in the future.
