RMHS Theatre’s ‘Comedy Sportz’ Returns
This year, Rolling Meadows brings back it’s beloved improv show-Comedy Sportz. It is aimed to interact with the audience and serve as a general platform for great entertainment and involvement. The theater program is excited to perform the skills that they have worked so hard to build up over the past couple of weeks.
Comedy Sportz is an improv comedy show brought together by student directors Lilya Viytyk and Maggie Snell, as well as four team leaders Madelyn Bixby, Payton Kohlberg, Daniel Ridler and Kayleigh Williams. Two teams go up against each other at once and play a series of games and based on how much the audience enjoys it, which they express through clapping and cheering, there is a decided winner by the end of it. Professional refs come from Chicago to ref the show.
“Honestly it works like any kind of team sport,” Theater director Stephanie Svarz said. “We learn all the games, we practice playing the games, the teams get to know each other and how to read each other’s humor styles… and from there we set up a really nice foundation for the actual show.”
The amazing thing about this kind of show is that it is always keeping the audience and the actors on their toes. The actors have learned and grown along with their teams throughout the preparation for the show and have spent lots of time practicing games and refining their ability to act without a script. The show is never the same one time, and the humor is always flowing in order to really engage those who come and watch it.
“People should come and see Comedy Sportz, not just one time, but multiple times because every single time we do the show it’s different,” Williams said. “It’s really fun to watch our [teams] on the spur of the moment.”
Overall, the show is there to give light to theater in a different kind of context. The show allows more fluidity and audience engagement. The show encourages audience participation, and the students performing just hope to make someone’s day a little better with their improv work.
Svarz has just one goal in mind: to make sure people leave having had a little bit of fun. “I think everyone leaves having seen or heard something that made them laugh,” she says.
