H.E.R.O. (Helping Educate Regarding Orientation)

HERO Club is a GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) club/ organization that provides a safe and supportive environment for students who are interested in discussing student-related issues surrounding sexual orientation. This club also works on promoting, educating and advocating LGBTQ topics within the RMHS community.

This club formerly known as “Gay Straight Alliance” has been around for 10 years at RMHS. It is sponsored by Parisaw Faye, a social worker. The club itself has great meaning to Faye.

“I love being able to support this club. I support the students’ ideas and help brainstorm ways to create a safe space for LGBTQIA+ youth and allies,” Faye said.

The club meets every Tuesday in B203. The club is dedicated to making sure that students who identify as LGBTQIA feel connected and respected.

“I love the passion that is involved in this club. The students are really invested in creating a safe space for LGBTQIA students,” said Faye.  “This club is important for the LGBTQ+ community because we promote a caring and supportive environment when students may not otherwise be able to benefit from that. We promote acceptance, inclusion, kindness, and are dedicated to ALL Mustangs. Especially those that may be marginalized because of their preferred orientation.”

Faye wants to be clear that this club is not just for students who identify in these often marginalized ways, but for all.  “This club is for anyone interested in supporting the LGBTQ community and general human rights- this is a great club for really any student though. There are so many benefits,” she said.

This club is an open space for all to share their thoughts, concerns, and feelings.
