Rolling Meadows High School offers a variety of different activities including music, theater, and clubs. One activity offered at Meadows that students may not be aware of is Model United Nations, also known as Model UN. The club is hosted by Mr. Ankrom and teaches students the fundamentals of politics as well as the development of relations between countries. From February 2nd to the 5th, the club attended a conference in downtown Chicago at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. They spent a total of 18 hours over the weekend in committee meetings. 

   The students were assigned a country to represent and spent time researching their countries to write papers about their problems. The club has different committees and they try to solve problems that are relevant to the students’ countries. These committees include the General Assembly, Economic and Social Councils, as well as the Crisis Committee. In the Crisis Committee students were woken up at midnight and had to deal with a made-up incident from midnight to 4:30 am. The students formed teams with each other and collaborated to write draft resolutions that encompassed the solutions to their problems that eventually were presented and voted on. The delegates finished voting on Saturday afternoon so the rest of the weekend could be spent on the delegate social event and “fun mun”. 

   Model UN is a great way to engage with others and learn more about political relations. You also can expand upon your abilities to present in front of larger crowds with meetings and conferences.
