Earning 3rd place in the MSL East with a 4-11-2 record, the girls soccer team is staying positive about their season as a whole.
The team itself is quite young with the majority of the team being underclassmen on their first or second year on varsity.
“We are an incredibly young team, with only 5 seniors, and the rest of our roster is sophomores and freshman,” Head Coach Michael Drenth said.
One of these underclassman is sophomore Kelsey Nallon, who has continued to gain confidence as the year has gone on.
“She has had a very nice year overall,” Drenth said. “She was our starting goalie last year as a freshman, too.”
Nallon has tried hard this year to improve her game.
“This year, I tried to learn from my mistakes and keep pushing myself,” Nallon said. “I have had some great games this year and I use those as my motivation to play well at every opportunity.”
A key scorer for the Lady Mustangs is sophomore Kat Perille, who has scored a team-best 5 goals.
“We have definitely had our ups and downs this season, but I thought overall it was really good,” Perille said. “Even though our record doesn’t show it, we have competed at a high level with a young team and that’s very encouraging.”
Perille, who is an all-conference player, credits her teammates for a successful season.
“My teammates have all been so supportive, so its not just me that should get the credit,” Perille said. “If I’m having a tough time connecting passes or taking open shots, they’re always there to encourage me. Every practice and every game we are all there to push each other to get better.”
Other major contributors to the team include all-conference senior Jamie Berry, who was also an honorable mention all-sectional player.
“It’s an honor, because I think a bunch of girls on my team deserve it as well,” Berry said. “It’s awesome that I got picked.”
Another key member of the squad is sophomore Mary Donlon, who, in Drenth’s opinion, is vastly underrated in terms of talent and what she brings to the team.
“Our unsung player is Mary Donlon, who comes in and does a lot of the small things to help, plus she keeps things loose and fun,” Drenth said.
Many players have also emphasized how excellent team chemistry has been this year.
“We were all pretty close to begin with,” sophomore Madeline Rebsamen said. “But between early morning practices, pasta parties and crazy bus rides, we have definitely gotten closer as a group.”
They all talk about how winning doesn’t happen at an individual level, but at a team level.
“Soccer is a team sport, and we can’t win without everyone,” sophomore Kyra Spiwak said. “Everyone has a major role in how we play, and it’s been so fun playing with everyone.”
As for the future, Drenth is quite confident that the team can be successful in the future.
“We have a lot of underclassman starters, who can make a huge difference in the next couple of years if they work hard during the off-season,” Head Coach Michael Drenth.
