Jay Cutler finally proved to his critics that, with a consistent offensive coordinator, he could be the quarterback that Bears fans always thought he could be. And then Adam Gase, the man that Cutler himself credits much of his success to, left to take a head coaching job elsewhere. Cutler had a career high in quarterback rating coupled with the lowest interception rate he’s had since 2011. Optimism for next year is high, even for a six-win team. But at least for now, Jay Cutler is here to stay. Cutler’s favorite target, running back Matt Forte, might not be. Recently, Forte said that while he would love to play in Chicago for the rest of his career, his foremost priority is winning a Super Bowl. Tight end Martellus Bennett might leave as well. Alshon Jeffery is thought to be one of the most coveted offensive free agents to sign this offseason. Which brings up an important question. Who in the world will Cutler throw the ball to in 2016? The good news for Bears fans (all 10 of you left, anyways) is that Jeffery should stay a Bear for at least the next season. The only caveat? Jeffery has a reputation for being injury-prone. In four seasons with the Bears, he has missed 13 games due to injury- which is almost one full season’s worth. Instead of giving Jeffery a lucrative, long-term deal, the Bears are more likely to franchise tag him for the 2016 season. This would give him one year to prove that he can stay healthy and be worth the hefty price tag that he will undoubtedly ask for come 2017.
