Swimming toward state
The varsity boys swim team is approaching championship season with their Conference meet on Feb. 10 and Sectionals the week after.
Last year, the team fell short of a Conference title. This year, the Mustangs have a strong senior class to lead them through the Conference meet.
“Our main goal will be to win Conference,” senior Jack Keeley said. “But we are also looking for each individual to get as many personal records as possible”
The boys swim practices have become more focused on individual growth. The athletes are focusing on their tecnhique and the little details that will make them faster and shorten their times.
“Now it’s all about training hard and putting in the work,” senior Andrew Tavares said. “Then after Conference we begin to taper and work on the details so at Sectionals we drop a lot of time.
After Conference, the team will have their Sectional meet, the only meet where the swimmers can qualify for the state meet. Seniors Josh Dellorto, Nate Pardini and Jake Pors, along with freshman Lukas Slifierz are training to make it to State in the 200 yard medley relay and 400 yard freestyle relay. Last Saturday, the relay team finished second in the 200 medley with a time of 1:42.09, while the overall team finished fifth among eight teams. Dellorto is also working to make a reappearance at the state meet in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races.
Outside of practice, the swimmers have taken initiative to stay in their best shape so they can compete at their best for the upcoming crucial races.
“It’s also important that we stay healthy,” Tavares said. “So getting sleep and eating healthy until then is very important.”
Although the boys regular season is over, they still have a while to go as they enter championship season and approach the State meet.
