2021 NBA intro
With lots of drama over the offseason and one of the most interesting seasons in the history of sports, the 2021 season had its own interesting start as well. From rookies playing like superstars and superstars playing like rookies, anything could happen this season.
The season started on Dec. 22, 2020, however, most teams had their first game on Christmas day. The newly formed Brooklyn Nets, the league-wide question mark, looked like a championship contender with their superstars both having amazing games. The other interesting team is the Golden State Warriors. In 2016 they had the best season-long performance of all time, but last year had the worst record in the NBA. With their star player Steph Curry coming back, the Warriors are looking like a team that has hope again.
Throughout the first week of the season, the best teams were teams that weren’t even in the conversation of a championship. We witnessed two players score 44 points in the same game, along with the best teams in the league losing by 50. The Los Angeles Clippers were heading into a tough game against the Dallas Mavericks who they beat in the first round of the playoffs just last year. The Clippers ended halftime down by 50, which is the largest deficit at halftime in NBA history.
Week two was full of entertainment, it seemed as if the normal NBA was back. Curry had his career-high 62 points. There were three 40 point games, one from Jaysin Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Giannis Antetokounmpo. This week also had the closest game of the entire season. However, towards the end of the week, drama started to build up again with superstar James Harden being unhappy with his team.
The third week had both tragedy and joy. Bradley Beal had both a 60 point game and a 40 point game that both ended in losses. We saw six 40 point games and a 37 point game from the rookie Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers. Nikola Jokic from the Denver Nuggets put up stats that we haven’t seen ever. However, on January 8th, a player from the Boston Celtics who was on the court had a questionable COVID-19 test, therefore postponing games for the first time of the year. Teams who have had postponed games due to COVID are the Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, Miami Heat, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks.10 teams had postponed games due to three questionable COVID tests.
To say the least, the NBA has had a super intriguing start whether you are a fan or not. Two 60 point games in just three weeks and COVID testing problems. If this season continues as it’s expected to, we will no doubt be in store for one of the greatest years of professional basketball ever.
