The RMHS boys basketball team has just finished a historical season, despite it being shortened, because of COVID-19. For the first time in 30 years, the Mustangs are conference champs, as they defeated Barrington 49-41. 

“It feels great to be conference champs,” senior Max Christie said. “It was one of our goals entering into the season and it feels even better to have my senior year end with a championship.”

In addition to being conference champs, the Mustangs had a perfect season, with a record of 15-0. This is the first time that the basketball team has had a perfect season, and as a result, the team set a few school records this season. 

Sophomore Cameron Christie and seniors (Max) Christie and Daniel Sobkowicz were all named to the MSL all-conference team. In addition to that, (Max) Christie was named MSL East Player of the Year, and head coach Kevin Katovich was named MSL East Coach of the Year. 

“It feels great to be player of the year, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” Max Christie said. “I’m glad I could end my senior year on a good note.”

On top of that, (Max) Christie also finished his senior year as RMHS’s all-time leading scorer and the MSL’s all-time leading scorer. He also was named to the McDonald’s All-American team, which is a great recognition. 

Although the season was shortened and definitely different than any other, the boys certainly made the best of their season. The basketball team is used to playing more in the winter, but their season got pushed back to starting in late January. 

“The timing of the season has certainly been different along with the uncertainty that has always looked over the season and games,” (Max) Christie said. “I’m just glad we got to see the entire thing through.”

But every new rule and difficult moment during the season was worth it when the boys got to honor tradition by cutting the net after their championship game and got to dump water over Katovich’s head.
