The RMHS Debate Team is looking to start the season off strong in Schaumburg; schools from all across Northern Illinois will be going head-to-head in a Public Forum tournament this Oct. 19th. Every team member is looking forward to the beginning of the season, including Head Coach Tim Waters.
“A major goal of ours is to see increased participation and for more kids to find success as members of the team. We want to see a [strong] team forming, so team building, team bonding…people feeling that this is a positive group to be a part of, and that’s something that they can gain from, both socially, and as debaters,” Waters said.
The new team captain, sophomore Kristina Junkovic agrees wholeheartedly. “I think that this year is looking so good already because everyone’s super passionate and I love the energy, and I think we’re gonna win so many awards…we’re gonna really bring the energy back, and it’s very exciting to see, especially what all the new members want to do, because we’ve grown a lot and I’m super excited to see it. And I really just want to be present and support anybody in any way,” she said.
Assistant Coach Caleb Ankrom also echoes their sentiments. Additionally, his motivation to coach and his ties to the team are purely for his members. “[My favorite part is] easily the students. The people that are involved. They love to talk, love to debate, they’re confident, but they also like research,” said Ankrom.
The RMHS Debate team can’t wait for the start of the season in Oct. They’re hoping to see supporters out there.
