The Bookbinders Initiative is back in action with its third annual Cereal Box Drive. Bookbinders, a creative and meaningful service club has been turning empty cereal boxes into book covers for bilingual books since 2022. These handmade books will be donated to the young readers at John Jay Elementary School, continuing a beloved tradition of literacy and community service.
The team officially launched this year’s project with an introductory meeting on Jan. 16. Looking ahead, members interested in volunteering to construct books can attend regular meetings held every 7th block in room E115 and the Art Room. These sessions will continue until March 7, providing many opportunities for participants to contribute to the creative process.
The challenge ahead is no small feat: over 115 books need to be completed before spring break. With teamwork, creativity, and dedication, the students are determined to achieve their mission.
Students and staff eager to support this initiative can contribute by donating cereal boxes and other types of thin, sturdy cardboard materials (i.e. pancake mix boxes, cracker boxes, etc.) to room E115. Each box brings the team closer to creating these impactful books. Making impacts on the lives of hundreds of young students, this initiative not only promotes literacy but also fosters connections between schools and the local community.
With a shared vision and collective effort, Bookbinders are poised to leave a lasting impact, one book—and one reader—at a time.
