The month of March has been dedicated as National Women’s History Month for over 30 years. This important event has been created to celebrate all of the contributions and achievements women have made for the country. The month started as a celebration in a single school district located in California, dedicating a week to presentations on important women, an essay contest, and a parade to end the week. As this event began to catch on in more communities and schools, the National Women’s History Project began fighting to secure the whole month of March. Finally, in March of 1987, Congress made it official that they will observe an annual Women’s History Month.
Since then schools all over the country have worked to educate about all of the influential women. Here at Rolling Meadows the staff and students have been working on doing just that. Some ways that Meadows has been celebrating this month is by displaying historical women such as Malala Yousafzai, Michelle Obama, and Amelia Earhart in the main foyer and the A wing. Not only is the school showcasing influential women throughout history, they also have been showing all of the extraordinary female staff at Rolling Meadows presented on TVs throughout the school. Additionally, seniors Maya Zapata Braun, Alexa Sohn, Jonathan Sroka, Olivia Kawula, Filip Sowa, Olivia Demuro, Haley Richter, junior Katarzyna Kurczak, and Sophmore Sindi Llazari have been sharing about important women over the morning announcements.
Organizations and clubs have also been doing their part. The EmpowHERment Intiative has worked with the library to decorate the space to promote Women’s History Month, and to share books with female authors or written about women. The club has also done work to help the larger community. They’ve done this by organizing a fundraiser for the Home of The Sparrow. This non profit works to help support women in the community, and for the month they will be collecting much needed items during second block. Some of the necessities include household supplies, kitchen items, and personal care products. Everything collected will go to an amazing cause that will greatly appreciate any support the school can provide.
